Exeter Chiefs’ director of rugby Pete Drewett has renewed his contract with the club for a further three years.
The new deal means he will join the rest of his coaching team – Rob Baxter, Paddy Anson and Paul Larkin – in committing himself to the club until the end of the 2010/11 season.
Drewett joined the Devon outfit two seasons ago after 14 years working for England Rugby. He attended Exeter University from 1978 to 1982 and began playing for Exeter on completion of his degree. He played his last game for Exeter in 1992. Drewett’s career with the RFU saw him finish with flourish as the England U21s’ team manager. The U21s won their first Grand Slam in 2004 and then again in 2006.
Chiefs have grown into a club that has seen success both on and off the pitch with two back-to-back cup final appearances at Twickenham, a smooth relocation to Sandy Park and a runners-up spot in this season’s league competition.
Drewett said today: “It was a real honour to be given the job two years ago and I have had immense support from the chief executive and board of directors.
“I believe we have made continuous improvement during the last two years but we still have to achieve something tangible and that’s what motivates the whole coaching and support staff every day. I feel a massive sense of responsibility to achieve success for the board, players, staff and supporters.”
Exeter Chiefs’ chief executive Tony Rowe said: “We are delighted Pete has agreed to extend his tenure with us. He has fully embraced and enhanced the ethos of our traditional club while also ensuring we have kept evolving to become the professional outfit we are today. The board has put its faith in Pete and his coaching team to reach the goals we have set for ourselves and I hope we continue to improve at the same rate that we have during the last two years.”
