Camberley's sevens campaign successfully continued on Sunday with a pool win and quarter-final finish in the Lytchett Sevens cup competition. After last week's promising start, Camberley were determined to start the day off with a win and dominated the first half against Chipping Sodbury. They held most of the possession and coupled with good ball-handling, they created gaps to score four tries by half-time. Most of these were under the post and were subsequently converted. The second half saw the opposition step up the defence but Camberley mauled well to get the ball out. After moving the ball round the park for a few minutes, Camberley scored twice more taking the final score to 40-0- an emphatic win and a good start to the day. After a two-hour wait, they next played Southampton Trojans- a stronger and better drilled side. Trojans tried to use their power from the outset, using their bigger players to crash the ball into contact. However, Camberley defended well and seized on the ball when Trojans fumbled a pass. After shipping the ball wide they scored in the corner in within five minutes. The next couple of minutes were evenly-matched, but a knock on after a kick from Camberley gave Trojans a scrum. Trojans failed to captialise on this and were jumped on as soon as the ball came out. After a successful maul, Camberley shipped the ball out wide and an unfortunate knock-on prevented them from scoring in the corner. The next few minutes were close again but a well-timed pass by the fly-half and good pace, saw Camberley score again before half-time. The second half saw a much closer contest but Camberley used the wings well and shipped the ball out wide to score once more before the final whistle- final score 17-0. This took Camberley into the quarter-finals of the cup- drawing them against the Buccaneers, a side made up of regional players. This proved to be the hardest game of the contest and depsite some strong defending, the oppostion used their pace to run through the Black and Ambers in the first five minutes and score. They proceeded to recycle the ball well and capitalised on any gaps in defence to score four times before half-time. Tiredness began to show in the second half and despite a spirited performance and a couple of good attacking breaks, Camberley lost 40-0 to the eventual runners-up of the cup competition. Camberley next tournament in at he Avon Fire and Rescue 10s, in two weeks' time.
