May
With the rugby season rapidly drawing to a close, Seghill Juniors held their annual Awards Presentation Evening on May 1st.
As always, the event was well attended by players, their families and the coaching staff.
With the junior section flourishing, the presentation ceremony is getting longer each year.
Under 12s coach, Dave Warner began the proceedings, announcing the awards for the younger players, with club president, George Arnott presenting the awards, as follows:
Most Improved Player: Jake Powell (wing)
Bravery: Tom Ramsey (centre)
Captain: Callum Burgess (Fly half)
Coach's Player of the Season: William Ramsey (who has scored the most tries for the U12s this season).
Best Newcomer: Connor Tall
Player's Player of the Season: This was a joint award for Callum Burgess and Matthew Hall.
Mick Glennie, coach of the Under 14's announced their award winners.
Coach's Player of the Season: Dean Cavaliero ( who scored 19 tries)
Most Improved Player: Matty Horner
Player's Player of the Season: Brad Glennie (for the second year running)
George Arnott then made several presentations to people who he felt have had an impact on the junior section at Seghill. His first award was to Mick Glennie, who helped develop the junior section from a hand-full of keen youngsters, to the thriving, and talented group of players there now are at the club. He then made an award to Pat Heard for all the work she does in getting the match reports and photograph into the press, and ensuring the club gets the publicity it needs to continue to thrive. He then made the Coach of the Season award to Dave Warner, who has lead the Under 12's to success over many of their local rivals, which had not been achieved before.
It was then up to Under 16s coach Mick McLean, and assistants Darren (Cav) Cavaliero and Dan Townshend to announce the awards for this age group.
Coach's Player of the Season: Nick Heard ( for the third year running).
Most Improved Player: Liam Lonsdale
Player's Player of the Season: John Peace
Cav Cavaliero then stepped forward unexpectedly, to make his own presentation to "the friendliest club he has ever player for". Cav is a serving soldier, who is leaving the club, having posted back to Germany. He presented the club with a plaque, in recognition of the enjoyable time he has spent there.
It was then down to the young players themselves, to shock their coaches with some awards of their own.
Under 16s captain, Craig Smith was first to step forward to present an award to Dan Townshend, who has been working as an assistant coach Mick McLean. Dan suffered a serious knee injury at the start of the season, and is awaiting major knee surgery. Since then he has worked tireless to help the Under 16's and coached them to a 43-0 victory over Houghton. The side wanted to take the opportunity to thank Dan for all he has done for them this season.
Dan, himself then presented a framed team photograph to Cav Cavaliero, who has been coaching the forwards, so he will remember the lads while off in Germany.
Dean Cavaliero then stepped forward to make an award to Mick Glennie, for all the work he has done with the Under 14s this season.
Dean then handed over to Mark French, who made a similar presentation to Under 16's coach, Mick McLean.
Under 16's hooker, Andy McLean then stepped up to make a presentation to George Arnott, in recognition for all the work he does for the whole junior section, and Seghill RFC as a whole.
Liam Lonsdale then took his place on the stage to make one final award. On behalf of the Under 16's, he presented a bouquet of flowers to a very shocked, Pat Heard for all she does for the team, including setting up the new colts website.
A raffle was then held for a Newcastle Falcons home shirt, signed by the whole Falcons squad, which raised £71 for the junior section. The shirt was won by a delighted, Nick Heard.
