NOTTINGHAM Rugby have clinched the signing of 22-year-old Tongan international back row Sione Kalamafoni.
The 6’4” player, who recently captained Tonga in the Pacific Nations Cup, arrived in the UK on Sunday for his first taste of English rugby.
Speaking at Meadow Lane today, Kalamafoni said: “It’s a really exciting time and I’m raring and ready to go. I’m loving being here, the stadium is absolutely brilliant and all the players, coaches and staff have been incredibly friendly.
“I’m looking forward to working with Glenn who is a fantastic coach and I don’t foresee any problems adapting to English life, including the weather, which I know will be very different to the Tongan climate!
“My parents and family back home have supported me playing rugby since I was in high school and obviously they are really happy that I’m now playing for a great club in a great league in England.”
Director of Rugby Glenn Delaney said: “Sione Kalamafoni is the exactly the type of quality player that we were looking to bring in. This is a great opportunity for him to show everyone on this side of the world what he can do and also brilliant for us to add another very high calibre player to our squad.”
The player began training with the squad today and Director of Rugby Delaney will be assessing his fitness ahead of the next game.
