Malvern geared up for new season
Malvern aim to hit the ground running on Saturday at 3.00pm as they kick off the new league campaign against old rivals Burton at Spring Lane. Close season training has been excellent under the tutelage of Mike Ruddock, and Director of Rugby Andy Longley announced that former Stourbridge forwards specialist John White has agreed to join the coaching set-up. “John brings a great deal of knowledge and skill to our strength, and with Adam Billig as player/coach of the back division we feel that we will be far better equipped to face the intensely competitive programme in front of us.” With virtually the same squad as last year, supplemented by a few key signings, the Malvern management are confident of a much higher league placing after two seasons struggling at the wrong end of the table. “Whilst our pack was as good as almost everyone else in the division last term, we leaked tries through a young and inexperienced defence. Those lads are a year older and wiser now” said Chairman Peter Woods, “and we have recruited some excellent experience with Tommy Hayes and Tommy Hughes joining Adam, and we also have Jimmy Aston back in the frame after a season where work demands kept him out of the side.” With Owen Jones returning from Broadstreet, the side has a well-balanced look and the whole squad is looking forward to resuming play against Burton, who have always played their part in some epic battles in past seasons. Malvern look towards a good turnout for the match.
“With Worcester Warriors for once not clashing with our home games, we look forward to seeing many of the Sixways faithful at Spring Lane on Saturday” said Woods. “Anyone producing a current Warriors season ticket at the gate will receive a concessionary discount on the entrance fee. Malvern members will also be able to purchase season tickets on the day.”
