Ripon 2nds 24 - 19 Yarnbury Hornets
With no first team fixture as the season draws to a close the Hornets took the spotlight with a merit second team league game at Ripon with Coach Bob Hood and his team in attendance to help and guide the young team and able to assist manager Wayne Rayner who has worked with the second string all season home and away.Ripon cried off their 1st and 3rd team games so the Hornets would be facing a tough task in North Yorkshire.
Ripon scored two tries within first 15 minutes, one converted, the second was questionable as the ball seemed to be held up over the line. Early 12-0 lead.
Up to this point Yarnbury had very little of the ball and very little of the game, with Ripon having near 100% territorial advantage.
Captain Wayne Butterfield was sin binned for protesting too much about the controversial second try.
Hornets held out for the period of 14 men and this galvanised their performance with an increase of intensity.
Back up to full strength they began to claw back the deficit.
Centre Phil Davies scoring 3 penalties bringing the score back to 12-9.
With 15 minutes to go Ripon had a 5 minute purple patch scoring 2 break away tries, one converted, to make the score 24-9. The scramble defence was good from all Hornets players showing great commitment and desire but just outdone by the pace of the attacks.
Yarnbury didnt lie down, and came back fighting. First substitute back row forward Joe Boucher crossing to score followed in quick succession by Alex Postle to make a grand stand finish for the last five minutes as the lead was cut to 24-19. The fight back was not to be completed as time ran out. Final score 24-19.
Special mentions for Jason Hall who for his 60 minutes on the pitch was inspirational, busy and workmanlike and didnt give his opposite man a second of peace throughout. Also Rob Clabby, repeatedly made yards with ball in hand and tireless in defence. Finally, Rob Mcloud who kept Ripons star centre out of the game with crunching tackles and also created good space and time for his wingers at every opportunity.
Line up was:-
1 Tom Whitfield

Yarnbury 3rds/4ths 5 - 80 Otley 2nd XV
-----------------------------------------------------------
A combined 3rds/4ths entertained Otley 2nd team in a rearranged fixture at Horsforth as both sides were without games.Captain Mick Pound scored early on with an interception near the attacking line but after that it was one way traffic for the much more experienced Otley side.
Special credit must go to veterans Simon Moglia,Chris and Phil Wray who could have been on gardening leave rather than making up the numbers for this rearranged fixture but they helped the Yarnbury Youngsters keep going to the final whistle.
