SOUTHWOLD SWALLOWS 48- PETERBOROUGH 12

Sunday the 11th April will be a match that will stick in Southwold Swallows heads for a very long time, walking away with the title of "Grand Slam winners of RFUW South Eastern 3"

A good crowd came to support Southwold away to Peterborough in what was hoping to be a brilliantly fought game of rugby and nobody was disappointed. Tension in the changing room could be cut with a knife as all 16 players prepared themselves.

The referee blew for the kick off and Southwold attacked Peterborough with everything they had. Peterborough had the upper hand in size, Southwold opted for a faster and quicker paced game. Which almost instantly proved to be the correct option as Savage scored a try within the first 5 minutes. Shortly after Peterborough used there size, a loose ball saw them power over the tryline, Southwold knew they had to up there game.

Using the same tactics of simply passing away from the big forwards and showing great skill in sucking in the Peterborough defenders Kim Roberts was finally given space to run. Clearing the back line and powering down the wing nothing was going to stop her from putting the ball over the line.

Southwold now in the lead had confidence in their own ability and with the new found killer instinct it only took another 5 minutes for a brilliant pass from Savage to Roberts who simply wrong footed her opposite winger was able to gas passed her to run in a 100 yard try under the posts, a simple conversion from MacDonald put the score at 24-7 as they ended the first half.

Southwold knowing only half the job was done and now going downhill had to match the performance of the first half. Peterborourgh was not going to make this a easy a walk over and Southwold felt the pressure straight away in the scrums with Laura Nutt, Sally Turner propping and Elissa Cox at hooking. Peterborough winning a scrum powered up the middle of the park with their forwards they looked as though nothing was going to stop them. A ball loose on the floor Peterborough were able to kick it behind the Swallows try line, quick to react Laura MacDonald charged down the pitch after Peterboroughs nippy fly half only to be penalised with the ref awarding a try for 'apparent intentional blocking". Shortly after both Anna Harrison and Bev Whyte scored.

The final score of the match came from some great backs play. Always keeping the pressure on Peterborough, Southwold was able to control the ball locking them completely out the game. A scrum just outside the 22 yard line gave a good platform for the backs popping down the line to Roberts running over the line . Final score was 48-12. Despite the score this was a hard fought game between the two team.

Southwold couldn’t have asked for anymore from themselves, they stepped up to the plate and played their socks off. With some outstanding performances from every individual player and pure dedication from new coach Mike Hume it was a full team effort which gave them the win. The whole squad would like to say big thank you to supports Prestige Nursing and Ellough Park Raceway for their generous donations and all supporters who have supported us at home and away, come rain or shine.
