The Wild Ones produced Rugby of the highest quality at the North
Midlands Under 11s Tournament, but agonisingly fell short at the semi
final stage. First up in the group stage was Camp Hill, and Worcester
quickly set out their intentions with an expansive running game, and
were rewarded with a 25 pts to 0 victory, with the tries coming from
Willem Stanley (3), and Dan Cottrill, and Will Tibbetts. Next up was Old
Halesonians, who who dispatched efficiently 40 pts to nil. Tries coming
from Stanley, Cottrill, Smith, and Griffiths. The last group game was
against old adverseries Stourbridge, but it was Worcesters running and
support play that Stour could not cope with, and Worcester completed the
group stage with a 20 pts to 0 win. Tries from Tibbetts, Gore, Stanley,
and Wootten. As group winners the Wild Ones went to the quarter final
stage, against Newport ( Salop ). They proved to be physically
intimadating, but the fast, up tempo game, the Wild Ones like to play
meant that Newport were often chasing shadows, and inventive passing,
incisive running, and a wonderful defence , saw the Wild Ones win 20 pts
to nil. Tries from Forrestor, Stanley, Smith and Lycett, completing the
scoring. The quick turn around from the quarter final to the semi, did
not help tired legs, and with Ledbury, who are physically huge,
especially up front, this was to be a stern test. As hard as the Wild
Ones tried, it was very difficult to win enough ball up front, for their
elusive backs to weave their magic. Ledbury were the first team all day
to cross the Wild Ones line, as they muscled their way over the try line
twice from close range in the first half. Worcester threw everything at
Ledbury in the second half, but it was not to be their day.
Nevertheless, Worcester certainly play the most pleasing to the eye
Rugby, and when they catch up with all the other clubs physically, they
will be a team to be very wary of.
