Yarnbury entertained high flying Sheffield at Brownberrie Lane with Jason Avieson back in the centre for Club Captain Stephen Riley who lent his experience to the Hornets.Adam Reynolds back at hooker and Bruce Johnson Laird returning to the back row.Coach Bob Hood again mixing round his squad with John Moore back at Stand Off and versatile fly half Lawrence Smith on the bench.
Yarnbury need to win all their remaining games to turn around the points deduction but were immediately under pressure from a strong Sheffield contingent with lively scrum half Matt Poste dummying from a scrum close in to wrong foot the Yarnbury defence and score under the posts stand off Donal Collins converting in the first five minutes.
This Yarnbury side are resilient and confident these days and their repreeible spirit took the game to Sheffield and from a poor pass that went to ground before bouncing up into the hands of centre Danny Thompson gave him a chance to run half the length of the field to score which John Moore converted with the wind to show a confident Sheffield side they were in for a hard afternoons work.Further pressure and line outs on the Sheffield line with good ball secured cleanly by Ian Maycock against the experience ex Rotherham lock John Dudley came to nothing as ball was spilled or Sheffield cleared or defended well against the Yarnbury backs.During the second period Sheffield had two men sin binned seperately for technical offienses but the away side coped well with the loss of numbers. With stalmate at the end of the half and Yarnbury facing the wind and the boot of Donal Collins the advantage was with the Sheffield side.
The second period was five minutes old when captain and right wing Mark Dixon got Yarnbury in front. After quick possession from the Yarnbury forwards saw the ball moved quickly out wide for the diminutive winger score in the corner.A further period of play saw intense pressure from the Sheffield side and they reduced the arrears and took the lead through two Collins penalties and a drop goal. This showed the danger from a confident side and Yarnbury needed to step up the control of the ball and the forwards responded led in fine style by Richard Longstaff in the back row.The pressure was telling on the South Yorkshire men who were repeatedly penalised by the referee to give Yarnbury ground and from a srum deep in their own territory got centre Jason Avieson into space who proceeded to break The Steelmens hearts with a weaving run through the middle of their backs to score from 50 metres out.
Lawrence Smith came on at stand off for the final quarter and Andy Butterfield at prop for the hard working Richard Lister and Yarnbury took the spoils despite giving Donal Collins two unconverted penalty chance out wide left and from drop outs Lawrence Smith gave him chances to drop goals but with a swirling wind protecting them Yarnbury saw out the game to Sheffields dismay.
Yarnbury now just need to topple the league leaders next week at Doncaster Wheatley Hills to keep up their exiting potential.
Bramley 2nds 8 Yarnbury Nomads 5
-------------------------------------------------------
Yarnbury travelled to Bramley with an excellent mix of youngsters and experience older heads such as Graham Riley Paul Oldridge in the second row and John Bramham out wide to give some pace to the back line.Simon Roberts and Steve Foster were in the centre growing with the experience in every game. This was the second game on the trot where The Nomads found themselves against a second string.
Yarnbury started up the slope and into the wind with Yarnbury dominating the scrums and hooker Harry Coleman taking two scrums against the head before they opened the scoring on 15 mins No8 Shaun Craven picked up from the back of the scrum found a gap and put scrum half Jack Moglia into space and fine long pass to wing John Bramham to score in the corner for John Haggis to convert.Bramley came straight back for the second row to barge over for an unconverted try.A further penalty gave The hosts the lead.
The game went to uncontested scrums after a bad injury and long stoppage due to a Bramley player and the ref decided to cut short the proceedings with Yarnbury down 8 - 5.No doubt if the game had progressed to its full term the younger Yarnbury team would have seen the benefit.
