Holt forwards knock Woodbridge back
Woodbridge Warriors arrived in muddy Holt looking to repeat their September victory against their host’s accomplished mauling. Woodbridge maintained an attacking stance for the first 25 minutes but were repeatedly forced back by Holt’s kicking and ended up playing mainly in their own half. When kicked back the Warriors much improved line-out reliably regained possession and Captain Cooke at No 8 grafted tirelessly all match to rally his forwards to the ruck and drive. Although weaker up front Woodbridge stayed on top of Holt’s notorious rolling maul that caused them so much trouble last time they met. From time to time the Warriors backs looked threatening but Holt’s kicking consistently frustrated attacks and kept the game central with Holt’s penalty kicked by Mears the only score at half time.
After the restart and several last pass misses in the greasy conditions the visitors finally put together a successful attack sending Steward over to take back the lead. Despite their mauls being held Holt’s hard working forwards dominated the scrum and it was these forwards that won the match for the home team in the last quarter. The recently substituted Warrior Cazelet was first penalised giving Mears another 3 points to lose the lead and was then unfortunate to be yellow carded. Holts forwards were quick to exploit fully the extra man and they rucked and mauled their way for Daniels to score and win a hard fought and physically draining match.
Final score: Holt 11 - Woodbridge Warriors 5
