Hawick are currently on an excellent run of form, with the last defeat
coming way back on the 26th September with that very poor display against
the Auld Enemy, Gala. This top of the table clash and the next two matches
against Aberdeen Grammar and Gala will have a big say in the where this
season's silverware will finally end up. The coaching staff certainly have
the winning mentality instilled into all the players who have come along way
since last season.
Stirling had the early chances and opportunity to put some points on the
board but missed three kickable penalties and a dropped goal. Hawick's
kicker Craig Neish also missed at least three kicks that he would normally
have been slotted without any trouble. It was Hawick who opened the scoring,
good work by the forwards saw quick ball released to the backs, the ball was
moved out to centre Graham Hogg who went over for a good try next to the
posts which Craig Neish converted for a seven point lead. Both teams had
chances to score but neither could break down the opposing defence and the
score remained at 7-0 until half time.
Stirling started the second half the stronger with their big forwards taking
on the Hawick pack but all they had to show for their hard work was a well
taken drop goal. With the match entering the final quarter, again good work
by the forwards and in particular Ross Gibson, saw David Lowrie on hand to
touch down in the corner for a 12 points to 3 advantage. A Stirling penalty
completed the scoring and a hard fought win for Hawick by 12 points to 6.
Had it not been for that losing bonus point, Hawick would now be sitting as
league leaders but Stirling still remain in pole position on points
difference.
