Deepings came out victorious following this big local derby with Peterborough.
The trip had not weakened the team spirit, as had happened before, and they began with some strong scrumaging and line out work.
However it was Peterborough who got the first chance to open the scoring. The ‘Boro forwards applied pressure towards the Deepings try line, and as more and more defenders got sucked in to halt the attacks progress, a penalty was awarded, the extremely blustery conditions though saw the ball sale wide of the uprights though.
Ten minutes later and Deepings found themselves under the posts again with another Peterborough penalty to be taken from right in front of the posts, but again there was a let off as the target was missed.
Playing against the wind and uphill, Deepings were forced to spend the remainder of the half defending hard as Peterborough used the conditions to their advantage. However courageous play from the Deepings pack held them away from the try line and the teams changed ends at half time 00 – 00.
In previous seasons this would have caused Deepings heads to drop, but the new mentality in the side, since securing promotion in their league for the second successive season, ensured that the team lifted themselves to play harder, as a result they were not 00 - 00 for long, with the backs combining well to put Simon Rees through a huge gap in the Peterborough defence, only to be high tackled as he crossed the line, a penalty try was awarded. Great pressure on Oli Peacock for the conversion kick, in the same way as Cipriani has proved his worth over Wilkinson, Peacock is threatening the boot of IXV choice Kicker Nick Dobie, Dobie was substituted at half time and replaced by the up and coming Peacock. Although missed by the Peterborough kicker earlier in the game, Peacock’s kick sailed true for another two Deepings points.
Deepings were now clearly in the ascendancy, where the forwards had been instrumental in the first half, the backs pulled together to put the pressure back on Peterborough line. Although Peterborough were not giving in easily the game returned to the stalemate of the first half and the score remained at 00 – 07.
Deepings have their final game of the season this Saturday, 12th April, at home against league rival Rushden & Higham, the game will be watched by the Deepings RUFC Vice Presidents, Club Sponsors and their guests, kick of is at 3pm at Linchfield Road, Deeping St James.
