Tries: Leila Johns

Libbie Jones

Vicky White

Conv: Leila Johns (x2)

Top of the table Henley travelled to Supermarine on Sunday in what turned out to be a very close encounter of two closely matched sides. Marine started below strength with only 13 players on the field. Henley took advantage of this shortfall and snuck in two tries in the first 15 minutes. Reinforced with a full team, Marine gained composure and good runs by Vicky White in the backs allowed Marine to gain ground, alleviating Leila Johns to put one down right in the corner.

Marine started well in the second half, some good mauling and communication by the forwards saw Libbie Jones put the home side ahead, the score now 12 - 10. Both sides pulled a try back with 15 minutes to go, Marine tried to hold their 4 point lead, holding most of the possession for the remaining minutes but unfortunately a breakaway try by the Henley backs left Marine trailing by one point with minutes to go.

Marine camped in Henley's 22 for the final few minutes and a late half way penalty kick from Leila Johns unluckily dipped just under the posts. Henley kicked into touch; time running out for Marine to make a comeback.

Even though Marine suffered defeat, some positive can be taken from the game. There was some brilliant defensive line stopping, Henley only gaining ground with kicks over the top. Scrummaging and rucking was excellent throughout, with Marine playing as a team and putting in 100%. Henley were that bit quicker off the ball, but the home side are already looking forward to proving themselves in the second encounter.

Next game - London Welsh at home - 22/11/09
