Southwold Swallows 30 Peterborough Ladies 12
Southwold Swallows third league win in a row saw them leap to the top of RFUW South Eastern 3. There has never been an easy game against Peterborough and despite the visitors struggling numerically this eleven a side contest was no exception.
Southwold couldn’t have got off to a better start when influential No.8 Bev Whyte supported a break before striding 50 metres to the line. The home side doubled the lead soon afterwards when Chantelle Savage had too much pace for the visitors as she scorched in from the halfway line. With no flankers both packs were having to work double time but the experience of Sharon Larter, Sarah Doddington and Michaela Scarle ensured plenty of ball for the black and golds and Peterborough couldn’t tame Bev who cantered over for her second and put Southwold fifteen points ahead.
However Peterborough refused to lie down and put the home side under real pressure and despite bone shaking defence from Laura Marjoram and an out of position Clare Phelps the visitors scored a converted try to reduce the lead to just eight points. Southwolds response was a real team effort with Laura Nutt, Sally Turner and Anna Harrison all in the thick of the action allowing the flying machine Chantelle to add her second and make the half time score 20-7.
Southwold extended the lead to 25-7 when the mighty mouse, Elissa Cox having a fine game at scrumhalf, released Chantelle for her hat trick. Back came Peterborough and Southwold spent ten minutes pinned on their own line with Donna Cooper and Nina Roe among others making try saving tackles. It was the penalties that were hurting the Swallows and when penalised for the umpteenth time Peterborough crashed over from short range. It was the Swallows who finished the stronger with Elissa out running a tired Peterborough defence to give Southwold the necessary points to send them top of the league.
