In the past two weeks the 1st XV have come away with some more good wins with plenty of points being scored, including a 68-0 win over Deeside and 122-0 victory over Westdyce. It has been great to see a number of emerging players take their place in the side and show that they are definitely capable of securing a permanent position in the team. This all helps to create some competition for positions which inevitably will only improve our performance as a team.

Fixture - 24th October 2009

This weekend Garioch will host Huntly RFC in what will be a very tough encounter. Huntly will be looking to hit back after a surprise loss to Deeside last week, so we will need to be on our game to ensure we continue to stay on top of the league. A win on the weekend will mean we are undefeated after the completion of one full round of games and half way towards achieving our ultimate goal. We still have many facets of our game which require attention so I implore everyone to be at training tonight and on Thursday so that we can prepare ourselves for this vital fixture.

Kick-off on Saturday is at 3pm at Kellands Park and I encourage all supporters to come and watch what is certain to be a hotly contested match.

UNDER 18s

A recent surge in the number if Under 18 players attending training has led us to be looking to get a side together to play some fixtures. It has been great to have had a core group of about 10 players at training each week working hard on their skills. We only need a few more players to commit in order to get a side prepared to play some fixtures. If you know anyone who may be interested, be sure to direct them down to training or pass on my contact details to them. This age group is vital in order to ensure that Garioch can continue to perform well in the seniors in years to come. Mark Roy has kindly offered his time to manage this team and we are looking forward to seeing the lads who are working very hard at training, applying their skills in some games in the near future.

MOVEMBER

This November a number of club members will be raising money for prostate cancer research by growing our best moustaches. Having only just started growing facial hair myself, I am excited about the prospect of emulating such Garioch legends as Pete Roberts, Keith Moir and Stuart Watson who proudly wore a ‘mo' for the best part of the 1970s and 80s.

Prostate cancer is a very serious health issue which could potentially affect many of us in the future. As a rugby club, we have an opportunity of not only recognising this, but also doing our bit to ensure research towards finding a cure can be continued.

Movember has been running in the UK since 2007 and "is about having fun, growing a moustache and raising much needed funds and awareness for men's health - specifically prostate cancer. What many people don't appreciate is that one man dies every hour of prostate cancer in the UK, more than 35,000 men will be diagnosed this year and that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK." The more people we can get involved by growing a ‘tash' for Movember, the more money we will be able to raise. I will be approaching many of you at training in the coming weeks to join our crusade so be prepared! We have registered our Garioch Movember team online, so now all I need are some more recruits. If you are interested in joining in, let me know and I'll pass on the details of how to join our team.
