With GHA languishing at the wrong end of the League table, this was an ideal
opportunity for the coaching staff and the players to put the much
criticised performance in the last home match against Gala behind them and
show the supporters that they are Premiership Division 2 winning material.
With a top of the table clash against Biggar next week, which will be minus
Bruce McNeil after another yellow card, a good win was vital.
A Neil Renwick penalty in the opening minutes gave Hawick a good start and
the same player converted his own try to gave Hawick a 10-0 lead. Good work
from standoff Dean McCracken paved the way for Greg Anderson to score in the
corner. GHA worked their way upfield and crossed for a converted try to put
them back in the match. Another two penalties from Renwick and a converted
try from Colin Murray saw Hawick reach half time virtually out of sight at
28 points to 7.
GHA's extended half time break saw the referee award a penalty to start the
second half but it was GHA who reduced the deficit to 14-28 with another
converted try. Replacement winger Michael Graham restored Hawick's lead with
a well taken try in the corner which guaranteed the bonus point. Neil
Renwick touched down for his second try of the afternoon and following good
work from Matt Landels and David Lowrie, Rory McPherson was up in support to
score Hawick's sixth try. A final surge from Charters saw young Greg
Anderson on hand to run in his second try of the match and a well deserved
victory for Hawick by 50 points to 14.
