With the last two matches against Aberdeen and Gala producing very
disappointing performances and results, the coaching staff and players were
eager to get the season back on track and with Dunfermline struggling near
the bottom of the league, Hawick's first visit to McKane Park must have been
the ideal opportunity to get that all important win. The very strong gale
force wind that was blowing almost directly across the pitch made handling
and passing very difficult and this resulted in numerous errors being made
by both teams throughout the afternoon.
Hawick took their time to get going but they worked their way up to the
Dunfermline end of the pitch and from a scrum, captain for the day, Bruce
McNeil was adjudged by the referee to have get the touchdown which was
converted by Neil Renwick. A penalty by the same player gave Hawick 10-0
lead. After good driving play by the Hawick forwards, Neil Renwick scampered
over for a try in the corner. With Hawick now in full flow, Neil Renwick who
is improving week on week, made an excellent break which Lee Armstrong
finished off with a try in the opposite corner. Halftime Dunfermline 0,
Hawick 22.
With the elements now slightly favouring the home side, they certainly came
more into the match and with McNeil sitting it out for ten minutes,
Dunfermline crossed for an unconverted try. Lee Armstrong then crossed for
his second touchdown of the afternoon, converted again by Renwick, to put
the match beyond doubt and that all important bonus point win. Dunfermline
managed a second try in the dying minutes, but Hawick rightly came away with
the spoils and a final score of 29 points to 12.
