Supermarine Ladies travelled to Surrey for their first team outing in the Championship South West 2 league. Supermarine started with strength and determination and held the home side on the back foot for most of the first half despite being one player short. Supermarine forwards showed tremendous effort throughout the first half. Richmond fought hard in the rucks and mauls turning many balls over and against the flow of the game Supermarine conceded a try before the half time whistle.
Into the second half Richmond were trying to take advantage of the 1 player overlap, launching the ball up the pitch on several occasions. Supermarine were starting to tire but kept battling on. Richmond scored another unconverted try and the scoreline was now 10 - 0. With new determination Supermarine Ladies got a quick ball out to Full-back Leila Johns to score and convert her own try from a difficult distance! The Ladies now had their sights set on a comeback despite 2 players being injured and leaving only 12 playing for a good portion of the second half. Supermarine pulled together as a team defensively so as not to let Richmond cross the line on a 3rd occasion. With time running out prop Sarah Allen held off the opposition and the ball was passed to Centre Natalie Williams who kicked the ball in field in a final attempt to gain ground. Natalie chased and tackled the opposition's receiver while the rest of the team marched forward in support. Scrum Half Samantha Way picked up at the back of the ruck that formed and saw a gap in the Richmond defence and ran the ball under the posts to win the game with a try that was converted by Natalie Williams seconds before the final whistle.
