With memories of losing to BBOB in their 1st match of the season, Towcestrians ‘put the record straight’ easing to a comfortable win in their build up to the Alliance Cup Final on Wednesday evening at Franklins Gardens.

In deteriorating conditions, handling errors were inevitable and it was incumbent on the Tows forwards to take charge of the ‘up front’ exchanges, and as the game advanced they clearly had the upper hand over the BBOB pack. The first Tows score came from No8 James Wallis who charged over for a try, which subsequently sparked a number of promising moves from the Tows backs most breaking down with the ball going to ground. Then with Tows going forward, Gag Evans showed excellent pace and judgement as he seared through a gap in the BBOB defence and passed to Matt Huck who was running at a good angle to score under the posts. Evans added the conversion to put Tows an unflattering 12Pts ahead at the break.

With the wind and rain at their backs Tows forced BBOB deep into defence for most of the second half, the only foray from BBOB into Tows territory being isolated runs from their backs. However, despite the pressure, Tows mis-judged the need for simple basics with over complicated moves until the third quarter of the game when Tows went into over-drive. An excellent try from James Padfield, followed by Matt Bodily who showed his power to break tackles and score before the Tows back row became rampant in attack. Blind Side Chris Kirby, having an excellent game, finished a forward drive with a try before Mark Page intercepted a pass to secure a further try and Tows to a comfortable win. This was an excellent ‘curtain raiser’ for Wednesday Alliance Cup Final against Old Northamptonians at Franklins Gardens, leaving the Tows selectors with a number of players staking their claim to play.
