Kenilworth Colts 26 - Earlsdon Colts 3
After four weeks without a game Kenilworth colts returned to action in the Warwickshire Colts cup.
After only four minutes Kenilworth scored a converted try. The forwards won clean ball and the backs fed the ball out quickly, Sammy Alkhalaf at centre flicked the ball out to his centre partner Rhys Jones who crashed over. Tom Palmer added the conversion.
The early score led to the home side taking their foot off the brake and allowing the visitors to come back into the game. Earlsdon responded with excellent phases of possession which resulted in them being awarded a penalty which was duly kicked.
The visitors seemed quicker to the breakdowns, probably symptomatic of the home sides long lay off, but their back line struggled to break down a well organised home defence.
When Kenilworth won a line out the ball was moved through the back line and full back Rhys Griffiths came into the line. His decisive 30 yard break cut the visitors to pieces and allowed Guy Grindlay to score under the posts. Tom Palmer converted.
The second half saw the introduction of Matt Cooper and Seb Assefuah. Matt having arrived an hour before kick from skiing and Seb breaking off from drumming duties on his rock tour.
The game continued in the same vein with Earlsdon having possession but failing to find a way past the home defence.
Matt Cooper then sealed the game with a fine individual try. Anticipating a move he was able to disrupt the visitor’s backs, fly hack and gather to score under the posts. Tom Palmer added the extras.
The final Kenilworth score was the best of the day with Guy Grindlay adding his second try. Bursting onto a rarity, a Matt Cooper pass, he outstripped the defence to scorch in from fully 60 yards .
The semi final of the competition takes place next Sunday the 6th April.
