If ever there was issue about bringing in Summer rugby then it was in
evidence at Mansfield Park for the visit from Kirkcaldy. The match was
played in glorious conditions throughout with the large crowd on the banking
basking in the warm sunshine. This resulted in an open match with both teams
attempting to play an expansive game of rugby.
Kirkcaldy opened the scoring with a penalty with just minutes on the clock.
From then on in the first half it was all Hawick who never took the pressure
of their opponents and as such, the scoreboard kept ticking over at fairly
regular intervals. John Coutts split the defence for a well taken try to
give Hawick a 5-3 lead. Winger Lee Armstrong, who had an excellent match,
was next to score after following up a speculative kick ahead and gathered
to score at the posts, Neil Renwick converted. A Renwick penalty gave Hawick
a 15-3 lead. Another Kirkcaldy penalty reduced the deficit to 15-6 but a
great break down the standside wing by Neil Renwick found Ross Gibson up in
support to score, again converted by Renwick to reach half time with a
healthy lead by 22 -6.
Hawick started the second half as they had finished the first and fast
improving flanker, Gary Lowrie, raced in from far out for another converted
try. It was now Bruce McNeil's turn to score when he picked up a loose ball
on the 22 to run in unopposed for Hawick's fifth try of the afternoon.
Hawick's star performer, John Coutts, broke from the halfway line to run in
for Hawick's sixth and final try of the afternoon, again converted by
Renwick for a 44-6 lead. Hawick took their foot off the pedal in the final
10 minutes which allowed Kirkcaldy a consolation converted try but Hawick
emerged worthy winners by 44 points to 13 to remain top of the Premier Two
League on 15 points. Next week's match is a top of the table clash with
Aberdeen Grammar at Rubislaw.
