A fantastic team performance by Wimbledon, who hosted Oakmedians at home, made for a very exciting and hard fought match and a very watchable one for supporters of both teams. The result though not a win was a good step up for the Dons against a team ranked in the top three of the league.
The penalty count was generally high due to the very exact but fair refereeing but the first chance of putting points on the scoreboard was missed by the opposition when a penalty kick went wide. While Oakmedians launched a few powerful attacks, the Wimbledon defence held firm. A forward drive by Oakmedians over the try-line was heroically held up and the battle for the first points continued. Oakmedians took their chances when the Dons were reduced to 14 players after a yellow card was given for a repeat off-side infringement. The first try scored was therefore unfortunately by an Oakmedian prop off a strong forward drive and duely converted to a score of 0-7. A second try followed a few minutes later by the Oakmedian backline and converted to a scoreline of 0-14 just before halftime.
But in true Wimbledon spirit the team had a search of heart during halftime and came out all guns blazing for the second half. Shortly into the second half the ball found its way to winger Maddie who side stepped and fought her way through four opposition numbers to finish her attack with an awesome sprint which beat a fifth defender to score the Dons’ first try in the very right corner of the pitch to 5-14. Guttie added another 2 points by converting a very difficult kick and the game was very much within reach with a score of 7-14.
The last 10-15 minutes of the game fitness and potentially a lapse of concentration became an issue and the opposition managed to score three tries by dodging tackles, good off-loading and strong running. One of them was converted for a final score of 7-31.
Overall, this was however one of the best performances by the team this season and sets the tone for the game against Richmond next week. Back of the game went to Maddie for dangerous attacking, forward of the game to Randy for good line-out work and rucking and player of the game to Sonic for an overall great performance.
