Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) successfully held the Standard Chartered Tertiary Invitation Sevens Tournament 2012 at King’s Park Sports Ground today. This year, a total of 33 teams participated, including two invited from South China Agricultural University from China.
In the men’s Division 1, the pre-tournament favourite and defending champions Chinese University were crowned the cup title by defeating Hong Kong University in sudden death after a 5-5 draw in the final. Chinese University Team II were also named the cup champions in the men’s Division 2. The guest institute South China Agricultural University took home the Women’s Cup.
“The teams are very competitive this year, especially in the men’s Division 1,” said the HKRFU Tertiary Rugby Officer Roy Law, “The tournament gave them a great opportunity to experience the excitement of rugby sevens, and also to play with the teams from mainland China. We are delighted to have them this year and they have been very competitive and it reflects on the continuing growth of tertiary rugby throughout the region. Hopefully next year we will see more overseas teams coming to take part in our tournament.”
“We have seen many talented national senior players coming through at tertiary level, such as Salom Yiu, Ben Ho and Charles Cheung, whose performance at the current Cup of Nations and Asian Sevens Series was outstanding, as well as Kenneth Hsieh, Alvin Chik and Aggie Poon” Law continued, “Now with 22 tertiary institutions joining our development programme, we expect more locally raised rugby players would be representing Hong Kong in the future. We thank our sponsors Standard Chartered for supporting the tertiary rugby in Hong Kong which would thrive for years to come.”
