Hong Kong women set off for Singapore

The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) today announced the National Women’s XVs Touring Squad that will be travelling to Singapore to play two test matches against the home team at United World College East on 14th and 17th December.
Led by first-time captain Christy Cheng and vice-captain Rose Fong, the 24-member squad has a mix of veteran players such as Samantha Scott, Royce Chan and Hoty Chan, as well as a few young stars like Natasha Olson-Thorne, Colleen Tjosvold and Lindsay Varty.
More than five newcomers will be earning their first XVs cap. “We hope to give more chances to the new blood,” Senior Coach Kane Jury commented, “Not only can the veteran pass on experiences to the young ones, the newcomers are also adding to the depth of the players.”
The tour allows the squad to play against creditable opposition. “We have some very close games with Singapore before,” Jury said, “The build-up has gone well. A lot of information has been given to the players in a relatively short preparation time and they are getting more comfortable with each training session. But the intensity will put our players a little under pressure to play to the slightly new structure.”
“However we are expecting to go to Singapore to win both games. As players and a management team we need to put pressure on ourselves to go out on the field being well-prepared and to execute a well-structured game plan.”
“Ultimately we hope to see women’s rugby step up from club rugby and reach the high standards of international rugby.” Jury concluded.
