Glorious weather greeted Newquay as they played their first game of the season at Perranporth. Healthy sized squads for both teams saw a decision made to play two games.

Perranporth 15 Newquay 10

In the first it was a an evenly matched game although Ben Hunt , Ethan Reed and Perran Heaman dominated in the scrum. Despite this it was Perranporth who made the most of a momentary lapse of concentration from the Newquay defence to score before half time.

At the re-start Newquay saw early pressure almost rewarded as they won yet another scrum and Ethan Morgan sped away, narrowly missing out as an excellent last ditch tackle from Perranporth on the right hand side prevented him from going over. The resulting line out saw the ball end up with Newquay’s Perrran Heaman who brushed aside the defence to level the score. The game was finely balanced but another lapse of concentration in defence saw Perranporth ahead once again.

Newquay responded and it was Perran who once again shrugged off the attentions of the Perranporth defenders to level the score. It looked to be heading for a draw but in the last minute a ruck in midfield saw a Perranporth player suddenly burst through and race away to score.

The second game saw some excellent tackling from debutant Ethan Gill before the ball was spun out to Owen Pryor who showed his pace as he streaked away to put Newquay into the lead. Buoyed by the early score Newquay continued to apply pressure with Arthur Bygrave’s endless energy carrying them forward whilst Ben Henwood was an absolute rock in defence with tackles of true quality. Sam Dobbs showed a slick pair of hands to unload the ball to Owen Pryor under the close attentions of a Perranporth defender, with Owen then niftily side stepping the clutching hands of the defence to score. In the second half Perranporth brought on several of their bigger players from the first game as they sought to counter Newquay’s dominance. It was an effective tactic as powerful running and missed tackles allowed them to draw level. However Newquay were not to be denied and excellent running from Evie Longworth saw Owen pop up on the left to seal the hat trick. In command once again a Newquay penalty saw Robin drive through towards the line before Sam Dobbs carried it over for the final try to crown a fine team performance.
