Caldy find themselves at the summit of the National League Two North table for the first time this season after a 25-26 win over Huddersfield edged them
ahead of Luctonians and Loughborough Students on points difference. In a game that paired together the division’s top two kickers, Chris Johnson scored all
of Huddersfield’s points with a ‘full house’ of a try, conversion, drop goal and five penalties. But it was Caldy marksman, Richard Vasey, who had the final say
by kicking a stoppage time penalty to claim the points in a thrilling game that saw the lead change hands six times.
Meanwhile, The Students and Luctonians were comfortable winners in home games against Hull and Harrogate respectively. Westoe were knocked off top
spot and drop three places in the table to fourth after going down to a 27-20 defeat at Preston Grasshoppers.
The other end of the league table doesn’t make for good reading for supporters of rugby in Humberside, with Hull only kept off the bottom of the table by
Ionians. Ionians’ search for a second win of the season continues into the weekend after they lost out at home to Leicester Lions in a scrappy affair at
Brantingham Park.
The battle of the Northern ‘new boys’ went the way of Stockport who defeated Bromsgrove 24-16 at the Memorial Ground, while fellow promoted side,
Sheffield Tigers, came away from Nuneaton with a losing bonus point for their efforts. Elsewhere, Otley put in a much- improved display to beat Kendal
46-34.
