Birmingham and Solihull went into this tough away trip with a confident
performance and result the week before versus Cinderford. The victory
and reports from the week before put a lot down to the pack and it
wasn’t long before this was working again. Bees’ Prop, Ngalu Tau went
under the posts on 4 minutes, after Chris Brightwell had made a fantastic
break to give the Bees an early lead. Bees’ Fly Half, Dan Hawkes added a
penalty before Wharfedale replied similarly, however missed the
conversion to leave Bees 10-8 up at half time.
Two tries from Wharfedale, split by a Jack Preece try and a penalty
midway through the second half, meant that with 7 minutes to go Bees
were trailing 20-18. It wasn’t until the 79th minute that Bees got the
chance to kick at goal after Wharfedale conceded a penalty which Dan
Hawkes calmly slotted over.
It was a close encounter at Threshfields, with a tight and feisty contest
taking place. This included 5 sin bins, including Chris Brightwell, Sam
Farmer, and Ross McMillan.
Eugene Martin explained after the game his delight in the, once again,
fantastic forwards as they steamrolled their way to victory for the second
week running. “I said to Masher (Matt Long), I have never seen a pack
work for each other like our guys did” confirmed Martin.
“They are all playing for each other and people like Tom Quarrie and
Mitch Todd are putting in a much higher work rate than we had.”
