After tough games against Ealing and Jersey, Bee’s were faced with
another tough home match against Cinderford. Eugene Martin knew
exactly what to expect with Cinderford known to have one of the best
front fives in the league. However, this did not go like this as Bee’s front 8
completely dominated the Forest of Dean pack. This included two big
driving mauls towards the end of the game which must have made up
over ten metres of ground.
The game started positively, when, in the second minute Dan Hawkes
kicked over a drop goal followed by a penalty to make the score 6-0 after
less than ten minutes. After Cinderford scored a try under the posts, Jon
Lowden went over the try line through a move that split Cinderford’s
defence. Bees were completely in control and kept the score ticking with
penalties to go in at half time 16-10 up.
The second half started similar to the first, with three points coming from
a penalty very early on, again from Dan Hawkes. Hawkes then had the
chance to put Bees three points further ahead from another penalty;
however the ball got caught in the wind only for it to land in front of Kiwi
Tom Quarrie to carry over for the second try. The conversion took the
score to 26-10 and even with another try from Cinderford, the game
looked easily won by Bees.
Man of the Match, Matt Long, explained “The aim was to take it back to
basics, get the basics right and build from there.” “We have put a lot of
hard work into lineout’s and scrimmaging over the week” said the
experienced prop. This match also saw ex-colt and M&J, Will Radburn
make his debut for Birmingham and Solihull.
