Kenilworth RFC made their way down to Somerset for their first game of their pre-season period, facing Bristolians Barton Hill Old Boys RFC. Due to the large number of senior players unavailable for this fixture the Kenilworth side was primarily made up of players graduating from last seasons colts side, sprinkled with 3 or 4 of last seasons 1st team. The Barton Hill side were a good representation of the sides K's will be facing in the league this season, large, heavy and able to execute a basic game plan efficiently. Despite good commitment from Kenilworth around the park they were penalised time and time again by the Barton Hill club member who refereed the game, and these penalties were routinely kicked for field position close to the K's line and duly driven. Despite the many dubious decisions going against them the young K's squad were never found wanting for enthusiasm and effort and can be pleased with the way they looked to play their rugby, expansive and with tempo. From the first blow of the referee's whistle to start the game, to the last penalty awarded to the home side, there was only ever going to be one side emerging victorious from this game, and Barton Hill were able to claim the win on the scoreboard 22-7.
The young squad (average age under 21) that travelled down to the game can be proud of a promising display, with many players making their senior rugby débuts, and with many of the more established first team squad members becoming available for the approaching fixtures Kenilworth can look forward to a promising season in Midlands One, starting with Old Halesonians at home on 3rd September (3pm kick off). This Saturday(20th Aug) Kenilworth RFC are hosting a 10's tournament at the clubs training ground, with spectators encouraged to come down and support the teams. The final pre season warm up game is against Peterborough on 27th August.
