Birmingham & Solihull’s Simon Hunt completed a hat trick of tries in the 79th minute of a thrilling local derby against Moseley on Saturday to bag an important first win for the Bees in their Championship Relegation Campaign.
In a see-saw game in which both sides scored 5 tries, the Bees seemingly had the game under control when centre Will Lawson finished off another bursting run from Hunt to score Bees’ fourth try 8 minutes into the second half to give the visitors a 15 point lead.
However Moseley staged a spirited revival which saw them score 3 tries in a 15 minute period, two of them converted against just one penalty in reply for the Bees, to put the Billesley Common side back into a 34-33 lead.
Seven’s star Simon Hunt, who in normal circumstances would be with Ben Ryan’s England side in Hong Kong, had the final word and sealed a memorable victory for the Birmingham & Solihull side and their travelling supporters.
Moseley, who played their full part in a thrilling and typically “topsy turvy” derby encounter, had to be satisfied with two losing Bonus Points, with the Bees picking up a vital 5 points in their quest to secure Championship status for next season
"Whilst it was great to win and get 5 points, we have won nothing yet and clearly have a lot of hard work to do to ensure our survival”, explained Bees’ Director of Rugby Russell Earnshaw. “As soon as the game finished, we turned our minds to this Friday and doing everything we can to ensure we perform in Plymouth."
Next up for the Bees is a long trip down to Plymouth Albion this Friday (25th March, KO 7.45pm), who themselves will be looking to get their Playoff Campaign back on track after going down 38 – 15 against Esher on Saturday.
Going into Round 3, Bees now sit in third place in “Pool C” with 9 points, 2 points ahead of bottom-placed Moseley who are on 7 points. Esher currently head the table with 16 points, with Plymouth Albion in second place on 11 points.
The only injury concern for the Bees following the Moseley game is winger Ian Davey, who limped off with an ankle injury having scored his first try for his new Club.
