Following the very disappointing performance at Mansfield Park two weeks ago in the league match against Boroughmuir, a much improved display was going to be required against Currie to retain any hope of progressing in this season's Cup campaign. Hawick did run Currie very close in their league encounter at Mansfield Park back in October before finally going down 11 points to 9.
Currie started playing with the strong breeze in their favour and had Hawick on the back foot for most of the first half, their big strong and physical forwards combining well with the backs to open up a commanding 28-0 lead at the interval, comprising of three tries, two conversions and three penalties. Currie certainly made Hawick pay for crucial missed tackles and the home side had no real answer to the power play of the visiting forwards.
The second half saw Hawick making fewer error and competing more with the Currie forwards but the Currie defence was proving a hard nut to crack. Greg Cottrell as ever battled away at scrumhalf and was awarded with a try when he ran in at the posts unopposed and finally got Hawick of the mark. Another two Currie penalties put them out of sight and sealed the match at 34-7 but as you would expect Hawick never gave in and fought to the final whistle. A good breakaway try by Craig Robertson converted by Gary Johnstone and a try in the final minute by captain Bruce McNeil which Rory Hutton converted made the final scoreline more a bit more respectable at 21-34.
