Malvern made hard work of their visit to Sixways and it was testament to the power and organisation of the Worcester forwards that the visitor’s backline spent more time defending than running with the ball.
The first half kicked off with Malvern pushed back on to their try line and having failed to win successive line outs and scrums they conceded the first points. Worcester immediately compounded the problems for Malvern by scoring again from a loose restart. Despite conceding two early tries the visitors kept working hard and started to make headway through a string of Worcester errors but after losing the ball in their own scrum Malvern went on to concede a third try.
After fifteen minutes of fierce forward play the Malvern pack found some form and created space in Worcester territory to give their backs a chance to show a little flair of their own. Some good hands along the backs got the ball out to Robinson who found a way to the try line. The half ended with Worcester adding two further tries as Malvern continued to work hard for very little reward. Worcester always seemed to be a yard ahead at the breakdown and able to make territorial gains from sometimes rushed Malvern decision making.
The second half opened with an excellent Malvern try as the forwards mauled Worcester off the ball and released Whiteman to sprint down the wing. Having made a breakthrough Malvern put pressure on the home side and made progress by being more alert and disruptive at the breakdown. Opportunities to break the Worcester defensive line were created but they were not rewarded with point scores.
Worcester eventually worked their way back into the game to add two further tries to their tally but Malvern can take heart from a much better second half performance that saw them hold the home side to two tries.
