Malvern U13s Dev 15
Hereford U13s 52
Hereford brought a very strong first team squad to Spring Lane and despite the gap in points; a mixed Malvern squad had some good periods of play.
Unusually, Malvern started slowly and struggled to contain a lively set of Hereford forwards. A string of infringements at the rucks allowed the visitors to push them back and having held off an attack on the right wing Hereford quickly found gaps on the left to score their first try. A second Hereford try followed in the twentieth minute when they broke against the run of play from a concerted Malvern attack.
Malvern made several substitutes at this point and promptly conceded a third try but after absorbing a lot of pressure the home forwards finally made some headway and put together a good string of phases to create some space on the left. They were held up on their first attempt to score but the backs took over and grounded the ball to secure the try. Hereford added a fourth try and two further tries were added to Malvern’s total by Curtis and Robinson to bring them back into contention.
The final twenty minutes saw the Hereford backs run riot with the ball as they found gaps in the Malvern defence and added a further four tries. The boys kept their heads up and continued to work hard making some forays into Hereford territory but against such a formidable set of backs they could not get the ball over the line.
The Malvern squad had opportunities to score but struggled against a quality defensive line. When put under pressure they lost their organisation and left gaps for Hereford to exploit but they did show tremendous spirit to create three scores of their own.
