Worcester Wild Ones traditional slow start was again evident, as they
hosted current Gloucestershire champions Gloucester Spartans. Spartans
were a well drilled side, with incisive running backs, with a lot of
pace. At every opportunity, they tried to spread the ball wide, and they
were quickly rewarded, when their winger squeezed in at the corner. The
conversion successful. The Wild Ones knew they were up against a quality
side, and soon started to play to their potential, but a last pass, or a
stray kick, prevented them from equalising. But when their forwards
started putting phases together, it was Spartans that started looking
vulnerable, and eventually Stanley crossed in the corner to even things
up. Wooton converting. From the kick off the ball was kicked straight to
the dangerous Spartans full back, who simply carved his way through a
dissapointing defence to score a fine individual try, again the
conversion was successful. This was a massive wake up call for the Wild
Ones, who then started to compose themselves, and play to their
strengths, and from a series of rucks close to the Spartans line, Jack
Dutton, who is improving with every game, forcing his way over the
whitewash, with Wooton again converting. The second half was an intense
affair, with the Wild Ones forwards matching their counterparts toe to
toe. It was in the loose that the Wild Ones had a slight egde, with Luke
Gailey excelling. The winning score came from a scrum in midfield. The
scrum slightly wheeled, George Wooton picked up, went blind, dummied the
winger and outsprinted the covering defence to touch down, and to
complete the scoring, he converted his own try.
