Luctonians U13s 20 Malvern U13s 34

An impressive start to the first half left Luctonians shell shocked as Malvern scored three tries to build a comfortable lead. The first came from the kick off when Malvern received the ball and ran directly at the middle of the Luctonians defence. The forwards immediately recycled through the ruck and the ball quickly found its way through the backs to Harry Robinson. With the home side’s defence still recovering from the Malvern forward onslaught Robinson found the gaps to ground the ball between the posts.

Ed Cullwick added the second try with a blistering run on the wing after Malvern settled the game down with a series of ruthless rucks that drove Luctonians back into their own territory. Malvern dominated the loose but made hard work of the set plays with Luctonians applying pressure in the scrum. Despite this they managed to retain possession after winning a scrum on the Luctonians ten yard line to set up a second try for Robinson.

Towards the end of the half the Malvern defence went to sleep and lost its shape. With the forwards losing possession in the rucks the door was left open for a resurgent Luctonians to pull back two tries by the end of the half.

Both sides made extensive half time substitutions but it was Luctonians who came out more organised and opened the second half with a try to even up the score as Malvern continued to lose their way. Joe Lampett put Malvern back in the lead after an excellent break to score against the run of play and Dan Batty converted to secure the extra points. This did not settle Malvern down as Luctonians turned the screw and were unlucky to come away from a prolonged spell of pressure with only one further try.

After spending so much time on the back foot it seemed that the fixture might drift away from Malvern but they fought their way back into the game with some real grit and determination. The final ten minutes were as impressive as the first fifteen as the Luctonians defence was tested to the limit and Malvern got just reward with two further Robinson tries.
