First time at Bournemouth! Lovely town! Idyllic setting! Great result! Long way
though!
Following last week’s draw at home, it was important to get the show on the road
again. The opening passage of play followed what has now become a familiar
pattern: kick-off followed by a penalty against Witney and a score against a few
minutes later, when the Oakmedians centre broke through his tackler and went on
to score under the posts.
0 : 7 . Louie Collins put in some fine work on the wing to gain some serious
ground. Unfortunately ill-discipline cost Witney a turn over penalty in a
promising position and the chance was gone. With 20 minutes gone, Snaz put in a
great run to beat the defence before offloading to Struttie to touch down under
the posts. 7 : 7. Oakmedians were game though and scored again on 28 minutes,
7 : 14. Louie was in determined form and went over again after 37 minutes to
restore parity at 14 : 14. Just before half time Henry Lamb cut through the
defence in a fine 30 metre run and Snaz was on hand to touch down and put Witney
in at half time at 14 : 21
After the break both teams had periods of pressure but it was Witney that were
able to put points on the board with a push-over try, touched down by Snaz.
Great work! Eddie did the honours yet again 14 : 28 - Eddie was not just kicking
everything he was offered but made some great catches under pressure . There
followed a lovely crossfield kick from Henry Lamb , which was scooped up by
Nathan who weaved his way to the line for another great score 35 : 14. Pierre
Dubost came on for Nathan and Carl Campbell made way for Tim Muller. But
Oakmedians were now resurgent and crossed for an unconverted try 19 : 35. The
ref. decided he had had enough of Owen and sent him for a 10 minute rest on the
touchline. Oakmedians took advantage of their numerical superiority and crossed
for another unconverted try 35 : 24. Witney woke up from their mid-half nap and
Eddie converted pressure into points with a nicely taken penalty 24 : 38. Pierre
Dubost finally got his hands on the ball, bamboozled half the Oakmedians team
with some deft footwork before allowing Al Richens to rumble over from 5 metres
– it reminded me of Asterix and Obelix. Eddie did the honours again and the game
ended 24 : 45
Some great stuff from everyone but the discipline issue is going to cost.
Notwithstanding some bizarre decisions from a very vocal referee the fact
remains that the penalty count was 12 – 2 against Witney and we played yet
another 10 minutes with 14 men!!
