With Shaun Lancett’s retirement from top amateur rugby to return to his home club of Upton on Severn, Malvern director of rugby David Robins was left with the problem of finding a tight head prop replacement as the cornerstone of the scrum. “Props are much harder to come by these days, and with the big step up in standards to Midlands One we needed to find someone with experience at a higher level”. The answer came this week with the signing of Nuneaton’s James Thomas, a 23 year old Welshman. “James was in Nuneaton’s National Two squad last year but had a restricted number of appearances. He was mulling over a return to Wales but I am delighted that he has decided to join us at Malvern instead. Shaun Lancett has given us some excellent service over the last few years, and it was always a done deal that he would return to Upton when the time came. He goes with our thanks for his contribution both on and off the field.”
As Robins continues to build the squad t was confirmed that the first warm-up game for next season will be against Burton on Saturday 16th August, with an away match at Weston Super Mare on the 23rd. The August Bank Holiday will see a home game against Cheltenham on 30th August, who for the first time ever will be playing at a lower level than Malvern.
